Buckwheat Honey
Buckwheat is a crop that is not widely planted in Australia and is 100% dependent on bees for pollination. It produces a fascinating honey with a pungent, earthy aroma. It has a dry and bitter aftertaste that’s not for the fainthearted.
Buckwheat Honey is rare and Limited Edition.
Botanical Information
Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is an annual plant that is fast growing with small leaves and hollow stems. It is a ‘pseudocereal’, meaning it can be used as a cereal or be ground into a flour. It is related to rhubarb and sorrel. It is 100% reliant on bees for pollination and flowers for around 4 weeks in February when conditions are humid.
Bees can be ‘grumpy’ around buckwheat and more likely to sting in the afternoon as the nectar flows slow.
Geographical Information
Traditionally buckwheat is grown in the Central Tablelands of NSW, although crops have been sown on the Southern Tablelands, Monaro and Northern Tablelands. Buckwheat is also cultivated in Victoria and Tasmania.
